We’ve developed a brand-new coilover kit for the BMW 1 Series — made specifically for the F20 — and it also fits the 2 Series F22. It uses a new-generation top mount design with a bearing, so steering feels smooth and you don’t get weird noises.

This is an entry-level, full-length adjustable coilover that leans more toward comfort. Ride height and stiffness can be adjusted, but the damping is already preset from the factory and is not adjustable.

After testing the full setup on an F20, the overall feel is on the softer/more compliant side — it’s not harsh. You still get good support, but it stays comfortable too. Both the owner and our team were very happy with the results.

This F20 kit is based on the F30 platform, but we re-matched the springs specifically for the F20, fixing the long-standing issues people had when running F30 coilovers on an F20 — like the rear not dropping enough and the ride being too stiff. Up front, we use a metal top mount with a bearing, which helps prevent noises. In the rear, we keep the OEM top mount.

Spring rates are 10k front and 11k rear. This setup has been optimized on the F-chassis, so it balances handling and comfort really well. Overall it feels more compliant and not overly stiff. Also, once a 1 Series on the F chassis is lowered, the stock end links don’t really work properly, so we include a pair of adjustable end links to replace the factory ones.

For ride height: the front can currently be adjusted to about -1 to -2. The rear spring is made a bit longer; rear height adjustment is around 0 fingers to -3 fingers (using the usual “finger gap” measure).

To improve comfort, the damper cartridge uses a long-travel twin-tube design, which is much more expensive to make.

As for why the damping isn’t adjustable: a lot of shops (and most owners) don’t know how to set damping properly, so we’d rather preset it from the factory to a dialed-in setting
